History
Scuffy Dogs Timeline
Scuffy Dogs were officially formed.
On November 1, 1994, Scuffy Dogs were officially formed.
First concert, first recordings, and first major lineup change.
Scuffy Dogs played their first concert in Kanal ob Soči in February. They soon began performing almost every weekend across Slovenia and Italy.
Saxophonist Boštjan joined the band, helping them create a distinctive punk sound that did not really exist in Slovenia at the time.
In April, they recorded the song Nočna Kronika, which appeared on the No Border Jam compilation.
That same year, Matjaž decided to leave the band because of family and work. Before leaving, he played the last few shows and recorded ten studio tracks in October.
In December, those songs were released as a split LP with Wasserdicht by Jay Walk Records. The record sold out in two months.
Oliver joined as the new bassist after Matjaž personally taught him the full set of songs and the original bass lines.
Award, German tour, and international releases.
In January, Scuffy Dogs received the “Maršev Gojzar” award from Radio Marš as the most promising band of 1995.
In March, they went on the German “Slovenian beer & noise bastards” tour with Oljo, who was only sixteen at the time.
After the tour, Boštjan left the band. Scuffy Dogs continued without saxophone and recorded a 7-inch vinyl release for the Italian label NuclearSunPunk.
Some songs from this period also appeared on international compilations in Italy, Germany, Brazil, the United States, Japan, Mexico, and elsewhere.
Self-titled CD and wider punk-scene recognition.
In cooperation with Riči from NuclearSunPunk, Scuffy Dogs released a self-titled CD.
The CD included tracks from the earlier split LP and newer recordings from 1996.
After this, the band became more established in the punk scene and played concerts and festivals alongside D.O.A., Cockney Rejects, NOFX, Crass, Strung Out, Marky Ramone, and others.
Nenad joined on drums.
Drummer Saša Kotnik was replaced by Nenad, a drummer from Nova Gorica and founder of Elvis Jackson.
That summer, Scuffy Dogs recorded the song Ni Izhoda for the compilation Držte jih to niso Niet, with Matej Briljo on bass and Maja on vocals.
New drummer, new bassist, and new material.
Neno left Scuffy Dogs and later moved to London, where he completed his drumming studies. He was replaced by Vili.
Oljo also left the band and was replaced on bass by Ivan Sirk.
With this lineup, the band began writing twelve new songs for their next album.
The second album was released.
Scuffy Dogs released their second, again untitled, album in June through the Slovenian label Front Rock.
The album was created in collaboration with renowned sound engineer Babot.
The Vesolj-Ska video reached the charts.
The band recorded a music video for the track Vesolj-Ska.
The video stayed on the Videspotnice chart for ten consecutive weeks and reached third place.
The band became inactive.
Because of the members’ personal and professional obligations, the band became inactive after 2003.
The restart idea appeared.
The idea of restarting Scuffy Dogs appeared in 2009. Only Tomo and Lasulja remained from the original lineup.
That summer, former bassist Ivan Sirk died at the age of forty-three after suffering a heart attack and drowning, just before Tomo and Lasulja planned to ask him if he wanted to play again.
A new lineup began to form with Tomo on vocals, Lasulja on guitar and vocals, Primož on bass, Erik on second guitar, and Edvin on drums.
First concert after seven years.
Scuffy Dogs played their first concert after seven years on April 28, 2010, at Mostovna, with around 1,000 people attending.
The band soon began performing again across Slovenia and Croatia.
Because of Petko’s acting schedule, American bastard from Nova Gorica joined on bass in December.
A compilation CD was released.
Since both CD releases had long been sold out, Front Rock and NuclearSunPunk released a compilation CD containing material from the first and second albums.
The release effectively presented the band’s complete discography.
The final concerts took place.
Scuffy Dogs played their last Slovenian concert in December at MKNŽ, the same club where their vinyl had been recorded fifteen years earlier.
Their final concert took place at the end of December in Pula, under the Roman arena.
Tomo Kutin passed away.
In February 2014, singer Tomo Kutin was diagnosed with salivary gland cancer.
He passed away in November 2014, bringing the story of Scuffy Dogs to an end.
25 years, band reunites first time for Tomo
Five years after losing frontman Tomo Kutin, and exactly twenty-five years after Scuffy Dogs were formed, the last lineup gathered for the first time at Mostovna.
Singers from other bands close to Tomo came to help with the performance.
Thirty years on, the band reunites for Tomo.
Ten years after losing frontman Tomo Kutin, and exactly thirty years after Scuffy Dogs were formed, the last lineup gathered one more time at Mostovna on 29 November 2024.
The concert — part memorial, part celebration — was billed as In Tomo We Trust and featured support from Pataf, Pizda Materna, and Ruu d čisterna & la farsa.
After this concert, the band decided on another reunion. Erik, Edvin, Sošo, Andraž and Boštjan back on sax. See you on the road.
